Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about building with Hutch. If your question isn't here, get in touch! We're always happy to chat.

How much does a conversion cost?

It depends on the base vehicle and the scope of the build. Our Essentials builds (Hiace, Transporter) typically land between $25k–$45k, Signature builds (mid-range Sprinters, ducato, Transits, larger vans) between $55k–$85k, and Bespoke builds (full-spec Sprinters or equivalent) from $90k–$160k+. All prices exclude the base vehicle and are indicative — every build is quoted individually after a design consultation.

How long does a build take?

Essentials builds take around 2–5 weeks, Signature builds 4–6 weeks, and Bespoke builds 5–10 weeks. Timelines depend on complexity, material availability, and our current queue. We'll give you a realistic timeframe during the quoting process.

I don't have a van yet. Can you help?

Absolutely. We'll guide you on the right base vehicle for your build — make, model, year, and spec — so you buy smart and don't end up with a van that doesn't suit what you're after. Talk to us before you buy.

Do you work on all van types?

We build across all major platforms: Mercedes Sprinter, Toyota Hiace, VW Transporter, Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit, Hyundai Staria and Renault Trafic. If you've got something else in mind, get in touch and we'll let you know.

What's included in certification?

Every full conversion includes VASS engineering certification or an equivalent certification to the State/Territory, licensed auto-electrical and electrician sign-off, and an Electrical Compliance Certificate, where applicable. Your van will be GVM legal and insurable as a campervan or campervan-style build.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes — every Hutch build comes with a 12-month warranty covering workmanship and installed components. Appliance warranties (Bushman, Dometic, Redarc) are covered by the manufacturers and typically run 2–5 years.

What's the deposit and payment structure?

We typically work on a staged payment structure — deposit to secure your build slot, a progress payment mid-build, and final payment before handover. We'll outline the exact structure in your quote.

Can I visit during the build?

Yes, you're welcome to visit the workshop during your build. We just ask that you call ahead, as we are a small team and can be in the middle of things. We also send regular progress photos so you can follow along.

Do you do repairs or modifications to existing conversions?

Our focus is new builds, but we're happy to discuss modifications or upgrades to existing vans on a case-by-case basis. Get in touch and let us know what you need.

Can you do just one part of a build? like electrical only?

Yes — we offer individual installs including electrical systems, bed platforms, storage, swivel seats, and more. Same Hutch quality, without the full conversion commitment.

Are all you builds premium, or do you offer budget builds?

We build across a wide range of budgets — but we don't do cheap. Every van that leaves our workshop is built properly, with quality materials, reliable brands, and the same craftsmanship regardless of price. The difference between a $25k build and a $150k build is scope and complexity, not quality. If you've got a budget, tell us — we'll design something excellent within it.
